First LPT and DA Challenge data portal

This site contains the datasets forming the first challenges on Lagrangian Particle Tracking (LPT) and on Data Assimilation (DA) from LPT data.

Updates June 17th and 22nd + July 10th, 2020: see changes highlighted in green. For full updated instructions, please consult file 1st LPT and DA Challenge Instructions_Update_10072020.pdf in the 'Challenge Files' section.

Due to the ongoing Covid-19 sanitary crisis, changes have occurred in the organization of the challenge and related workshop. Please see below the new deadline for upload of processed data, as well as the new date and location for the workshop. Please also consult for all important dates. We will continue to monitor the course of events and let participants know in case of further changes.

Please note the following points:

  • Datasets can be freely downloaded by everyone, even without participation to the challenge. Please feel free to have a look at them, and at the document providing their description and the instructions to participants! To access to the data, you simply have to create an account on this website. Account creation is anonymous and only requires a valid e-mail address; accordingly, during results presentation, no mention will be made of the identity of participants who downloaded the data. Only participants/teams who upload processed data and register to the challenge (see below) will be included in the results presentation.
  • The LPT and DA challenges are independent from one another. Each participant may decide to participate to only one of them, or to both of them.
  • Participants are allowed to submit a maximum of two result files for the same dataset(s), in case these two results are obtained from two different algorithms. Uploading two results obtained by only changing one or several processing parameters of the same algorithm is not allowed.
  • The LPT challenge comprises several types of data: time-resolved (TR), four-pulse (FP, pairs of double exposure images), and two-pulse (TP, pairs of single exposure images). The participants may choose the type of data they want to process (i.e. time-resolved, four-pulse or two-pulse, or several of those).
  • If you choose to participate, please imperatively register to the CFD for PIV workshop (to be held in Paris, November 19-20, 2020, and during which the results will be presented), and select 'Yes' for 'Intending to participate at DA- or LPT- challenge'. For more informations on the workshop itself, please visit
  • The due date for uploading processed results is July 17th, 2020. Further practical details regarding the upload of these results will be sent by email to each participant registered as mentioned in the previous point.

All data files can be downloaded by clicking the link 'Challenge files' on the left panel, once logged in.
