Short biography

Luis Henrique graduated in September 2017 from Ecole Polytechnique, Université Paris-Saclay (France) with a Master of Science in Fluid Mechanics. He also received his Engineering Degree from ENSTA-ParisTech, Université Paris-Saclay (France) and from Escola de Engenharia de São Carlos - Universidade de São Paulo (Brazil), in a double degree agreement.

He’s currently reading for a PhD in the ERC AEROFLEX project at ONERA, under the supervision of Dr. Olivier Marquet, Prof. Dr. Angelo Iollo and Prof. Dr. Michel Bergmann.

Project abstract

The forced oscillation of a profiled body in a fluid makes it possible to generate average thrust and lift forces. This propulsion not only has been shown intimately related to the wake stability, but recent studies indicate that the optimal propulsion is achieved for body oscillation and structural resonance frequencies which excite the wake’s most unstable mode, the latter strongly related to the body motion and deformation.

We seek a better understanding of this phenomenon. Through suitable stability analysis we wish to investigate the flow behind moving bodies in a global framework, determining whether linear perturbations around the mean flow play an important role in the energy amplification and thrust enhancement. A connection between the mean flow, its instability waves and the propulsive efficiency can then be established.

Further, the results of this analysis will be used to perform a parametrical study on structural and body motion parameters to optimize the propulsive efficiency. The tools developed for the stability analysis will also be used to investigate the influence of the confinement level over the system stability.
